As part of my Master of Design projects, I explored the concept of underground dwellings for the year 2168. Faced with the catastrophic effects of global warming, our surface world would be uninhabitable due to extreme temperatures and rising sea levels. My project envisioned a future where humanity could thrive underground, making use of the naturally cooler subterranean environment.

The seed
For my Master of Design Exegesis, I explored the increasing disconnect between humanity and the natural environment, especially among children. This research highlighted the significant role of early childhood interactions with nature in fostering environmental consciousness and protection. However, current educational structures focus heavily on indoor and digital activities, limiting meaningful engagement with the natural world. My project aimed to develop design solutions from various disciplines to reshape early education programs and spaces, emphasising stronger empathy and connection to nature. The site of this project became the rooftops of inner city apartment buildings. As more high-rises and apartment spaces appeared, natural environments became less plentiful. This project envisioned rooftop parks on these buildings, providing children with a backyard at their doorstep. These spaces allowed communities to gather and enjoy nature together, reintroducing nature-centric learning environments in urban settings.
